Having children together means you and your ex-partner will always have a connection. While the romantic relationship may be over, many couples can still have a cordial co-parenting relationship.

Whether you’re new to co-parenting, or you and your ex have been apart for a while, here are some tips to make your plan more effective.

1. Communication

Communication is the foundation of a good co-parenting relationship. Open and respectful conversations help avoid miscommunication. If you and your ex-partner have difficulties with face-to-face conversations ending in conflict, you should consider emails, text messages or co-parenting apps.

2. Keep the focus on your children

Your children’s best interests should be the primary factor in your decision-making. Rather than focusing on unresolved issues, consider what will make your child feel secure and loved.

3. Boundaries

It’s crucial to set clear boundaries to avoid drama. Define your roles and limits early on to ensure you’re both on the same page.

4. Consistency and compromise

Children need routine. Consistency in their daily lives helps them feel secure. There needs to be a custody and visitation schedule. But plans sometimes need to be re-adjusted when the unexpected arises. Understanding and compromise can pave the way for better interactions in the future.

5. Don’t involve your children in your conflicts
